Title: Demographic Structure and Sociocultural Dynamics of Singapore Ping She and Tian Yun Peking Opera Society: A Comparative Analysis of Membership Composition and Its Evolution
Abstract: As a significant art form and carrier of Chinese cultural heritage, Peking opera was introduced to Singapore in the late 19th century through the wave of Chinese merchant immigration and has since evolved over 130 years. In Singapore’s multicultural society, Peking opera not only preserves Chinese cultural traditions but also absorbs local cultural influences, developing a distinctive character that balances heritage and innovation. This study focuses on Singapore Ping Sheh and Thau Yong Peking Opera Troupe, employing qualitative research methods, including semi-structured interviews, historical archives, secondary interviews, and analysis of troupe records. It compares the two troupes in terms of their demographic composition—encompassing age, gender, ethnicity, and occupational backgrounds—and their sociocultural dynamics, specifically examining aspects such as heritage mechanisms, community engagement, resource allocation, and developmental trajectories.
