Title: Cultural Identity of Contemporary Chinese Youth in the Perspective of “Time–Space Compression”
Abstract: Within the process of “time–space compression” as revealed by David Harvey, the logic of capital incessantly accelerates the reconstruction of space and the fragmentation of time, rendering individual experiences suspended between immediacy and uncertainty. Contemporary Chinese youth are deeply entangled in this condition: they migrate and survive within networks shaped by the interweaving of urbanization and digitalization, constructing relationships and identities under the rhythms of algorithmic regulation. They confront highly compressed living spaces and a constantly interrupted sense of temporality. While bearing the heavy pressure of the global capital’s “presentism,” they simultaneously seek belonging and meaning within mobility. Under such tensions, youth cultural practices emerge as processes of tracing roots and resisting abstract homogenization, thereby renegotiating and reimagining their life positions, value coordinates, and possible futures.
