Title: The Genealogy of Riot: Violent Politics in Modern Japan and Historical Narrative in “The Silent Cry

Abstract:  The tradition of “riot” in modern Japanese political history has always maintained an ambiguous stance. Since the Meiji Restoration, Japan has wavered between emulating the West and preserving its Asian identity, while violent activities—from the Sakuradamon Incident to the 1960 Anpo protests—have persisted as a notable phenomenon in the process of nation-building. In The Silent Cry, Kenzaburō ōe reconstructs this genealogy of violence through literary narrative, creating temporal and spatial echoes between historical events such as the Ansei Purge and the Blood Tax Rebellion of the late Edo period and the postwar student movements. Drawing on Walter Benjamin's philosophy of history, ōe portrays the brothers Takashi and Mitsusaburō as embodying the opposition between historical materialism and historicism. The interweaving of local riot histories in the Shikoku mountain village with nationwide political movements demonstrates how violence persisted from late Edo activists and gamblers to postwar “violence experts,” while also revealing Japan's ambivalent attitude toward Western powers—a blend of resentment and admiration, resistance and dependence. Symbols such as the Supermarket King and the elephant further concretize the complex psychological structure of postwar Japan, making the novel a crucial text for interpreting the cycle of violence and identity anxiety in Japan's modernization process.
