Title:The Connection Between Cao Zhi’s Ornate Writing of Poetry and Fu and Early Chinese Buddhism
Abstract: The large ornaments mentioned in Cao Zhi’s “Ode to a Beauty” as “bright pearls adorning her jade-like body”(“明珠交玉体”) and in “Rhapsody on the Goddess of the Luo River” as “studded with bright pearls to illuminate her form”(“缀明珠以耀躯”)were likely literary depictions inspired by the jeweled ornaments (yingluo) that adorn Buddhist statues. Based on an analysis of the raw materials, form, wearing method, and combined with research findings from excavated artifacts, relevant documentary records, and literary descriptions, it can be determined that this type of large ornament was not of indigenous origin but closely resembled the jeweled ornaments found on Buddhist statues. Considering the characteristics of Gandharan Bodhisattva statues introduced to China during the Eastern Han and Three Kingdoms periods, along with Cao Zhi’s connections to Buddhism, it is highly plausible that Cao Zhi had seen such jeweled ornaments and was inspired by them. Starting from the implicit meaning of the term “jade-like body” and considering the structure of ancient clothing, it can be further argued that the prototype of the ornament described by Cao Zhi as being worn over light, revealing garments could only have been the jeweled ornaments that adorn Bodhisattva statues. In terms of the reception of Buddhism, Cao Zhi was a literary figure who pioneered new trends. The influence of early Chinese Buddhism on Cao Zhi’s creative work illustrates the significant role Buddhist imagery played in the process of religious dissemination. Before engaging with Buddhist doctrines, Chinese literati were first exposed to and influenced by Buddhist art.
