Title: Discipline, Discourse, and Heterotopia: A Power Perspective on A Dictionary of Maqiao

Abstract: Utilizing the narrative form of a "dictionary-style" novel, A Dictionary of Maqiao constructs a folk heterotopia through language. This paper aims to conduct a discursive analysis of this Maqiao heterotopia using Michel Foucault’s theory of power-discourse. Within this space, language exists as discourse; it selects its users and regulates the order of regional culture. Power exerts discipline and exile over individuals through discourse, fulfilling its function of maintaining stability. When confronted with the impact of external modernity and foreign power-discourses, the folk discourse of Maqiao exhibits a stance of rejection while simultaneously assimilating and transforming these external influences. The world of Maqiao is essentially a hybrid field collaged from discursive fragments. This "city-state of power" both solidifies itself through discipline and undergoes profound semantic reshaping and existential transformation under the imprint of modernity.
