Title: Meritorious Ministers Portraits During the Yuan to Ming Dynasty and Literary Writings

Abstract: The establishment of merit-official temples and portraits of the meritorious were ways in which ancient monarchs commended those with outstanding contributions and recorded their achievements. During the Yuan to Ming Dynasty, Emperor Taizu of Ming inherited the tradition of painting portraits for meritorious officials from the Han and Tang dynasties. He successively built shrines for loyal officials and temples for meritorious figures, and commissioned portraits of them at Kanglang Mountain in Poyang, Nanchang in Jiangxi, and Jilong Mountain in Nanjing. As a form of court art, portraits of meritorious officials were endowed with profound political connotations. Literati in the Ming and Qing dynasties produced literary writings on the Ming Dynasty merit-official temples and their portraits, which were reflected in three aspects: admiration and yearning for the honored officials enshrined and portrayed; lamentation over the unpredictable fates of the founding meritorious officials; and expression of nostalgia for the former dynasty at the sites of merit-official temples and portraits.
